The 60’s brought us the sexual revolution. Women suddenly had the option of birth control and were able to earn their own money. They burned their bras and a whole new culture began.
It’s been a confusing journey for the sexes. We are living much longer lives and when you say “I do” in your youth, you don’t fully understand the meaning of “until death do us part” until you’ve been married long enough to get bored.High divorce rates and infidelity have played a large role as a result of the revolution. It wasn’t necessarily better before the 60’s, women just had less options. If they were unhappy in their marriage, they tended to stay to avoid a less than favorable “reputation” as well as not having the ability to earn enough to support themselves. The burden was mostly felt by women but men also chose to stay in an unhappy or dysfunctional marriage simply because appearances were too important, or he didn’t earn enough to support two households.
In the last decade, we’ve seen the explosion of social media and have enjoyed reconnecting with old friends—and lovers. We meet new people from all over the globe as we peruse our Facebook and Twitter feeds. Conversations start up and relationships begin which can lead to romanticizing who this other person is—or who we want them to be. Men and women both participate.
One of the dangers that social media flirting offers, is that when we are in a committed relationship that is going through a lull or boring phase, the temptation to find excitement with a stranger is very easy and very tempting. If it goes too far, the otherwise healthy relationship that just needed a little time to get back on track, can be forever ruined. Remember Anthony Weiner?
You’ve more than likely seen the many articles on how Facebook has broken up marriages and causes fighting and arguments. It’s difficult to decipher what is innocent and what is intentional flirting. Something that can start as an innocent “like” on a picture can easily and quickly result in that inevitable question “ Are you on Skype?”
Cell phones are now equipped with video chat and it’s quite simple to make that leap when no one is looking. But frankly, everyone is looking. So much is out there for anyone to see and with all the great things that come with the technological advances we’re making, our relationships are under construction— a new revolution.
It’s my theory that the next generation, who will grow up in this tech world, will view relationships differently. It’s fairly easy to catch someone flirting online and it’s also easy to jump to conclusions. It’s impossible to accurately understand what the truth is behind a comment or a “like.”What we have been experiencing for the past fifty or so years is now changing at a rapid place and we are forced to keep up.
I don’t know what it will mean exactly for our romantic relationships but I like to believe it will force both genders to really take a look at what they want in a mate. People will always pair off and have children. There’s bound to be divorce in any scenario—people change, they grow apart or they choose to marry for the wrong reasons and eventually part ways.
Social media is redefining the way we are conducting our love lives. It is increasingly difficult to trust someone who appears to be an Internet flirt. I question if it will make our relationships more difficult or if we will benefit from the changes taking place.

I don’t normally write book reviews but I am making an exception.
The book: CRAZY: a psychological thriller by Ann Werner (my mother and writing partner).
My mother and I run ARK Stories Publishing and CRAZY is our latest release. Obviously you might be thinking I have an ulterior motive (actually two motives). Well, of course I want you to buy the book because if you enjoy thrillers, I have a feeling you’ll be telling your friends about this one. So even though I am one of the publishers of this title, I honestly love this story so much, I am going to post my review here.
The lead character is Emily Simonson, a six foot blonde, who used to be an actress and is now an author being stalked by a crazy serial killer. Emily’s character is based on me. The funny thing is, when my mother wrote this story, I was still an actress. Interesting that I became an author and I’m hoping the parallels stop there.
CRAZY is a new twist on a serial killer. You haven’t read or seen this particular story before. Like American Psycho, the backdrop is not dark or dank as it is in Silence Of The Lambs (which I love). I like to describe it as “colorful macabre.” We are introduced to The Guardian early on and realize that the person stalking Emily is a very disturbed individual who has no real grasp on reality. As the serial killer executes the plan of terror with the intense determination of eventual victory, we are left to wonder just who hates Emily so much?
Tall blonde actresses who resemble Emily are being killed off in a gruesome fashion. The lunatic killer has a fierce, diabolical passion and absolute resolve. Dark humor adds a distinctive layer to the murders. The characters are well defined and it reads like a movie. The pace is swift and the story builds with a measured intensity that keeps the reader wondering how and if Emily can survive this nightmare that forces her to live in a prison of fear, terror and self-blame.
My favorite part of the book—as with any good thriller—is the creepy factor. I love scary stories. Some of the scenarios in CRAZY are pretty extreme, even the ones that aren’t bloody—especially the ones that aren’t bloody, are spooky.
If you like a good, scary novel, you will really enjoy this book! Everyone who has read it so far said they couldn’t put it down. Now we need reviews. So please, if you get the book (and like it) post a review on Amazon.
I never had any idea that when I wrote my Open letter To Rush Limbaugh from a Liberal Slut that I would be asked to contribute to two liberal, political websites, including the popular Addicting Info AND be asked to be the Spokeswoman for Rock The Slut Vote! I had the honor and privelage to attend the War On Women rally in Sacramento on April 28, and gave a speech.
Ever since the Bush Administration stole the 2000 election, I've followed politics and considered myself to be an armchair activist. I've made phone calls on behalf of politicians, I've talked with my friends and made political posts on Facebook and Twitter but that was the extent of it.
THEN, you opened that enormous mouth of yours and went off on Sandra Fluke. Your big mouth really pissed off a lot of women. UniteWomen.org was, in part started as a result of your ignorance and Rock The Slut Vote was definitely a direct result of your blatant hatred of smart women.
It's hard to decide how to feel about you, and I speak for many here. So many men and women think your hate speech is offensive and you should be removed from the airwaves. But if it wasn't for you, perhaps this fight against the War On Women wouldn't have become such a big deal.
My wise grandmother always said "You can't argue with ignorance." I believe she was right. But you CAN fight it and make sure that every woman votes this next election. I will do everything I can to make sure every hideous thing you say is reported on. I may not be Rachel Maddow but I do have a platform now, thanks to you! :) And it's growing everyday!
Here's the thing Rush, by calling Fluke a slut, you have called millions of women sluts. And SLUTS VOTE! Feminazi's have enjoyed freedom for decades and there's NO WAY IN HELL your faithful followers like John Boehner, Eric Cantor, Mitch McConnell and all the rest of you blowhards will succeed in taking what we EARNED away from us (and never should have HAD to fight for in the place)! There's just no way.
Men love contraception. We all know if men could get pregnant, abortions would be legal, free and at every Walmart across this country. Smart men love women who are independent and can take care of themselves. It's only the oppressors like you who wish to take women back to when they had no real voice. This War On Women is also a War On Men who have a BRAIN! Just because you guys say there's no War On Women (after you started it) doesn't mean we're buying it. Keep saying derogatory things about strong, successful women. It's helping our cause, more than anything else.
